DIY at Sac's Bike Kitchen

Sacramento, CA
I learned to ride a bike eons ago. Fine, 22 years ago to be less general. I left cycling in the past once I moved to college. I feared an early death if I biked at Berkeley, which has to be one of the hilliest campuses in the country. Then when hanging out with friends in Brooklyn, I borrowed someone's road bike and rode along the East River at 2 a.m. in the early summer. Immediately, I remembered why I enjoyed cycling and vowed to get a bike upon my return to Cali.

Living and working in downtown Sacramento affords me a friendly re-entry into a world I had long abandoned for the capitalist's insistence that a car is the way to get around (outside of NYC). Craigslist seemed the logical place to turn to for used bikes. Thanks to CL, I bought Lola, a purple hybrid, not in the greatest condition, but definitely in my price range. Lola left her humble abode in Davis and made her way to my apartment's balcony.

Earlier this month, I realized that the front tire was flat so I decided to take it to the Bike Kitchen which my co-worker had raved about when I first got Lola. The best time to go to the Bike Kitchen may not be right after taking a noon shower on a 90+ degree day but I did it anyway. When the friendly Vic at the Bike Kitchen said Lola needed to have the tire tube repaired, I thought he was going to do the dirty work. Instead, he passed me onto a friendly volunteer with piercing blue eyes and red hair and tremendous patience who taught me how to and had me 1) remove the front tire, 2) remove the tire tube and 3) patch the tube.

I highly recommend going to Bike Kitchens (there's a collective around the country) because I left that place feeling empowered (and incredibly sweaty). Not only did I pay $5 for an extra tube should this happen again (which inevitably it will) but I also learned some skills that will come in handy. I'm returning next week to fix the chain and brake :)

Below is a bike marked "lola" Unfortunately my Lola doesn't look a thing like this bike but perhaps one day I can paint it pink!

Cuteness Comes From Canada and with a Young Age Presentation

Two summers ago, Ellen Page was all the rage with the release of "Juno" co-starring Michael Cera, the king of awkweird characters on the silver screen. Didn't get the Ellen craze. Didn't watch mainstream films while in NYC so now that I'm with disposable income due to my steady employer, I am making up for lost time by watching as many films as possible.

Last week, I watched "Juno." Not only was the film every bit of good as I had heard (and more), but it really made self-reflect. Clearly, that's what films are meant to do besides suck your pocket dry of chump change. Catharsis. Release. Escapism. Identification, although more often than not dis/misidentification is much more common.

I was surprised by how gifted Ellen Page is an actor. And how damn cute she really is, too. Then I stumbled upon the "Whip It" trailer and I cannot believe I am going to write the following: I have a celebrity crush on Ellen Page (despite having the appearance of a teenager)! O Canada! Glasses on the laydees make me all weak in the knees and other regions of the body.

Last line in trailer is pretty darn good: "You came in second out of two teams. Celebrate mediocrity, that's fantastic!"

cama de clavos

teleradio donoso is pure pop genius. musically and aesthetically because not only do they embrace the past (as do many other hipster fueled bands) but they do this with a freshness and genuine appreciation. ah the audience sees what they want to see.

and the lead singer is awfully cute with and/or without his glasses. chile done good!

"cama de clavos" is their recent single that embodies their pop brilliance.

blogging in moderation

i went from blogging every so often karlita gave me material to post (all the time she opens her mouth and/or is awake) to not blogging for several months because of cross country/apartment search/acclimating to farm country/village/new job in field where i'm a complete novice and then to a sudden resuscitation in the last few weeks.

this past week was hard what with one of my closest friends having surgery required a serious dose of self-care (thanks grad school!) i briefly stepped away from everything that seemed unimportant: internets included.

the day i returned to work, i was reminded of the popularity surrounding social networking sites such as twitter. more importantly, i remembered how instead of emailing my friends that have full time jobs or are people of leisure that may not always want to hurt my feelings by being honest in their reply emails to me, i can just blog!

for smiling purposes enjoy the following (photo courtesy of michael k at my fav celebrity site of the d listing kind)

John Hughes, RIP

Si se pudo Sonia!

My favorite legalese speaking homegrrrl (queen cone, you're #2!) got the confirmation to become the next U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The first Raza mujer. The first Puerto Rican. The first un-wed woman? The first person with my fashion taste.

Oy, and for shits and more shits, read this bit posted by the White House. I enjoyed reading more about Sonia's decisions and learning that she has a niece named Kylie (not Minogue). Creepy part: the propagada on the side of the site talking about a strong middle class = strong america. UGH Karl Marx is rolling in his bougie grave.

new york may 2009 what 3 graduation ceremonies in 2 days can lead to

more than two months have passed since i last blogged. surprisingly, not much has happened to me besides a) leaving nyc in early june, b) relocating to sac -capitol of furloughs and bike friendly streets, c) driving to IKEA instead of catching the free shuttle from a subway stop, d) catching up with my beloved californians/go bears!, e) cramming as much info/stats/names/profiles relating to violence against women at college campuses (for the job), and f) dreaming about the hybrid bike i rode during my lunch break....

no quotes of late since i haven't talked to karlita in a while. but here are visuals attesting to some of the above mentioned happenings:

Dear Facebook...

Who better than Mark Morford to write about how freakishly !@#$% Facebook is when it comes to keeping ties with folks.

BEST BIT:
"From an energy perspective, Facebook is a goddamn cord-makin' wonderland, a sort of psychic Grand Central, the place where psychic energy goes to jack itself back into the mainframe. It's tens of millions of people peeking and poking and peering into the lives of those they know, those they want to know, those they like or love or hate or begrudge or secretly want to peel the pants from and lick like a popsicle in summer."

I concur, Mark. Totes.
